HEIDI SCHROCK Burgenland

The pretty medieval town of Rust in upper Burgenland nestles on the edge of the Neusiedler See, the westernmost of Europe’s great steppe lakes. This 320km sq stretch of water is nowhere more than a couple of metres deep, and it’s edges are concealed amongst deep banks of bullrushes. The lake brings two gifts to the vineyards that surround Rust – thermoregulation of seasonal temperature, and botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that creates the most complex of sweet wines. Heidi Schrock took over the family vineyard and winery in 1988, following stints in Germany and South Africa. With the help of her two sons she oversees some 10 hectares of vines spread out on the gentle slopes behind the town, and a broad mix of varieties which includes Furmint, Welschrielsing, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Furmint, Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for the whites, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt for red wines. Her dry whites – the majority of the production – are hand-picked, cool-fermented and left on the lees for several months, whilst the reds are lightly pressed and aged for 9 to 18 months in large old oak barrels. The superstars of this cellar, though, are the sweet whites, of which the finest is the extraordinary Ruster Ausbruch, in 2014 a blend of Furmint and Sauvignon Blanc with a ravishing 200g of residual sugar!

Deep gold, lots of glycerol texture, rich, clearly botrytised, incredible depth and layered concentration. Very intense, with an elevated, bright citrus component and richly layered sweetness marked by notes of dried apricots, all in most beautifully poised balance. Very, very long, and absolutely stunning.
