Formerly known as Domaine François Jobard, this is one of the finest addresses in Burgundy, a reputation that has held true for many years. After a period during which the two worked together, Antoine took over fully from his father in 2008. François epitomised the stoic traditionalist, crafting wines that were designed for the long term, with an extended and austere youth which rewarded the patient with amongst the most intensely mineral, tautly refined and complex of all white Burgundies. Antoine has changed very little – the emphasis remains in the vineyard, with short pruning, ploughing, distain for any form of synthetic treatment, and straightforward and traditional cellar work, using not more than 20% new oak (a mixture of Allier and Vosges from Damy in Meursault). He has extended the duration of barrel ageing from 18 to 24 months, during the course of which the wines undergo a very slow malolactic fermentation – nothing is rushed here, so no trendy batonnage, (lees stirring) which he feels gives wines which flatter young, but age less gracefully. Despite this, the observer can detect a distinct trend towards wines which exhibit what Kermit Lynch, the Domaine’s long-standing Californian importer, beautifully describes as a ‘sensuous approachability’.

The Bourgogne Blanc, which comes from parcels within the four vineyards which fan out immediately below the village is quite stunning, at least as good as many a village Meursault. Quantities of all the wines are inevitably minuscule.
