DOMAINE de SAUMAREZ Murviel-les-Montpellier

Robin & Liz Williamson, respectively from Guernsey and New Zealand, are a couple who grew tired of the London city life, and in 2004 they exchanged it for an arguably harsher, but surely more spiritually fulfilling one as vignerons. A lengthy search throughout the Midi finally found them in the ancient village of Murviel, just to the west of Montpellier, set in low hills covered in olive groves and vineyards with wonderful views stretching to the distant Mediterranean. The domaine consists of 11 hectares spread amongst several parcels at altitudes varying from 80 to 150 metres, one located inside the walls of Murviel’s pre-Roman fortified hill town. The harsh, unforgiving terroir here is referred to as Aalenien a mixture of Jurassic marls, quartz, schist and granite which is unique to this part of the Languedoc. The vineyards are planted to a classic mix of Languedoc varieties, principally Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, with some Cabernet-Sauvignon for the reds, and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites. The regime here is aimed at accentuating the uniqueness and originality of the terroir, and to this end the accent is strongly one of low intervention. No herbicides or pesticides are used, and the domaine is certified as fully organic. The grapes are picked by hand, and the traditional vinification takes place in concrete and oak vats, with a proportion of the best cuvées being aged in new and used oak barrels of various capacities. There is a minimum of pumping in the cellar, with the use of gravity where possible. Only minuscule quantities of SO2 are used, and then only at bottling.

These are truly lovely wines, full, ripe with a fine, bright freshness, and very considerable class and complexity, and they completely belie Robin & Liz’s relative lack of experience – the couple studied viticulture and winemaking at the excellent faculty at Plumpton College in Sussex, and have only around 10 vintages behind them. They do, however, have a hugely confident and refreshingly intelligent approach to their new metier. The white is barrel fermented and clean, mineral and fresh, with an attractive but gentle roundness, the red delightfully rich and crunchy, with bright overtones of violets and wild herbs, and a subtle background hint of some very smart cooperage. Both Alenien and Trinitas are selections of the best, lowest yielding plots, and are serious barrique aged red wines, full and ripe, with well integrated oak. After 5 or 6 years evolution in bottle they develop interesting, complex flavours hinting at tobacco and dried fruits, and would comfortably challenge petits chateaux claret of a rather higher price.
