Situated immediately to the north-west of Sancerre, and lying on essentially the same Kimmeridgian limestone marls, Menetou-Salon has not suffered its neighbour’s overexposure and the consequent dilution of quality. To the well informed wine lover, it is therefore a worthy source of often underrated, intense, flinty Sauvignon Blanc. Domaine Pellé is the leading estate in the appellation. It is run by Anne Pellé and her son Paul-Henry with meticulous care in both vineyard and cuverie. Neither herbicides nor pesticides are used, and the estate makes its own compost. The Morogues cuvée exhibits an intense minerality and a fine balance between grape variety and terroir. The Clos du Blanchais is an enclosed vineyard with clay-limestone soil with a southwest exposure, giving more intensity and power.

“Once seen as the poor man’s Sancerre, Henry Pellé blow the socks off some of their more famed neighbours. “
