LUIGI BAUDANA Serralunga d’Alba

Luigi Baudana exploited this tiny holding on the steep slopes below the village of Serralunga, in the hamlet which bears his name, for over 30 years. One senses a long familial association with these precious acres, which include the fine marl and limestone slopes of the cru Cerretta. With no heir, he has passed over his interests to the traditionalist Aldo Vajra and his son Guiseppe, safe hands indeed, for Baudana and his wife Fiorina wished above all to ensure a sound continuity for the estate, and a solid respect for the history of their land. Although Guiseppe, who considers himself the guardian of the vineyard, took over vineyard and commercial operations from 2008, Baudana himself remains fully engaged in the winemaking process. These are truly fabulous Baroli, and if the Vajra association has, as some believe, added an extra layer of polish to the wines, it has also definitively taken nothing away.

The Baudana cru comprises 1.3 hectares of calcerous south-south-west facing slope yielding around 45 hl/ha. The wine is aged in 2,500 litre Slovenian oak barrels for 24 months, and shows red pomegranate, spice cocoa notes on the nose, with a full, rounded palate and fine, well resolved tannins. Cerretta (formerly Cerretta Piani) is 0.8 hectares of south and south-east facing calcerous slope yielding 40 hl/ha. After a similar procedure of a fairly warm two week vatting, with regular pumping-over for the first week, it is then aged in 225 and 500 ltr barriques for 24 months. It carries a garnet red colour, darker under the new regime, with orange reflexes, with aromas of wild red and black berries, cocoa and vanilla, warm and complex on the palate, with fine persistence and longevity.

Viticulture is fully sustainable, with a mixture of organic and biodynamic approaches.

LUIGI BAUDANA, Serralunga d’Alba

“The 2006 Barolo Cerretta reveals more overt influence than the Baudana in its aromas, flavors and texture. High-toned menthol, flowers, spices and dark red fruit all make an appearance in this beautifully delineated Barolo. The intensity of the fruit carries through nicely to the long, vibrant finish. The Cerretta is a touch fresher and rounder than the Baudana in this vintage. This is another commendable effort from the Vajra family. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.” Antonio Galloni

“The 2007 Barolo Cerretta is serious juice. This dark, imposing Barolo covers every inch of the palate with deep layers of dark Serralunga fruit. There is tremendous excitement in the glass. The 2007 Barolo Ceretta is sensual, racy and powerful, all in equal measure. It is a wonderfully complete, delineated wine that captivates all of the senses. This is another dazzling effort from Giuseppe Vajra.” Antonio Galloni, December 2010
