The vineyards of Parva Res (which I think broadly translates from the Latin as ‘Little Things’) are located on the hills surrounding Marsala, Salemi and Mazara del Vallo, in the Western part of Sicily. At between 200 and 400 metres above the sea level there is some relief from the coastal heat, as well as a substantial diurnal temperature fluctuation which serves to accentuate freshness and aromatic character. The soil is clay, providing extremely good water retention and allowing the grapes to achieve full physiological ripeness, with excellent and well developed aromas together with good structure. The white Catarrato has a pale yellow colour, with persistent aromas touching on citrus and subtle tropical fruits, with good freshness on the palate, and a ripe, well balanced finish. The Nero d’Avola is deep in colour, with aromas of black and red cherries, plums and bitter chocolate. On the palate it is intense, juicy and vibrant, with ripe blackberry and raspberry flavours and soft tannins. Both represent excellent value for money, and the red in particular has proven exceptionally popular in the shop, being regularly added to baskets as a day-to-day wine to supplement purchases of substantially more expensive wines from our catalogue. Both have proven a hit as the house wines in the restaurant at Ashlyns Farm Shop.
