DOMAINE FRANCOIS LUMPP, Givry

Run by Francois and his wife Isabelle, this dynamic domaine is considered to be one of the best in the Chalonnaise. When Francois split away from his family twenty or so years ago he replanted all of the vineyards with the finest quality clones at a very dense spacing in order to force the roots into the subsoil and to help pull yields down. Viticulture on the 6.5 hectares is manual, with close pruning, no use of synthetic products, and handpicking with a severe selection of only the best material. The wines are sublime, pure, poised and beautifully balanced, and display a degree of class and finesse often lacking in wines even from the more esteemed appellations of the Cote d’Or, in both colours.

I cannot recommend them enough to lovers of fine red and white Burgundy.
