Bought by their paternal grandfather in 1947, this growing estate is now immaculately run by the three Brèt Freres, whose passion extends to farming the vineyard organically and biodynamically in order to ensure the the ultimate expression of the Bajocian limestone soils in this tiny Vinzelles appellation just to the east of the far larger Pouilly-Fuissé agglomeration. The wines that they craft are above all subtle, delicately nuanced and most beautifully balanced. The Clôs de Grandpère is a walled vineyard that came down from their maternal grandfather, the 50 year old vines lying on an outcrop of hard limestone at the foot of the Vinzelles slopes. The wines here are marked by this assertive terroir, and are mineral and strikingly elegant. The Pouilly-Vinzelles comes from 25-50 year old vines in the ‘Les Quarts’ lieu-dit across the road, clay-limestone on south-east facing slopes bringing a fuller, slightly richer expression of classic southern Maconnais Chardonnay.
